House wire (single-core PVC cable)
House wire is single-core, PVC-insulated copper cable. It is pulled through conduit to wire lights, plugs, geysers and stoves, and to run earth conductors. We cut it to length per metre, and the most-used sizes also come as full 100m rolls, which work out cheaper per metre.
Which size for which circuit
- 1.5mm² – lighting circuits.
- 2.5mm² – plug (socket) circuits.
- 4mm² – 6mm² – geysers, stoves and longer or heavier circuits.
- 10mm² – 16mm² – supply to the DB board, sub-boards and main earth.
This is a rough guide. The right size also depends on the breaker, the load and the length of the run, so always have a qualified electrician confirm it.
Colours
Red (or brown) for live, black (or blue) for neutral, and green/yellow only ever for earth.
